Hey everyone. Just wanted to give an update on the new video game I'm designing. I've done all the story, plot, level progression, and character work. And now I'm working with the game engine specs to work out the details of the play mechanics- power ups, weapons, and all that. And we're also about to start doing concept art for all the types of enemies and worlds. It's a first person shooter game- but sprite based, not with 3D polygons. I was basically hired to design a game utilizing someone else's pre-existing game engine which is fairly primitive because it's for the iphone and ipod touch. Kind of a challenge. But it's going well so far.

Will post more when I have more news.

Well, I mean it's an FPS, but it's not like doom. The weapons are more strategic than pure action, and you kind of have to plan a bit more what you're going to do between levels rather than just charging in and be damn good at first person shooting. Also, it's a little open ended in that there are many ways to get to the last boss, and choosing how you do it is part of the strategy and fun. You can be conservative and take an easier route in journeying to the last boss (but maybe run out of time and lose) or you can be bold, take harder routes, and be rewarded by getting closer to the last boss with each level completion (but face a greater chance of dying and lose). Each player will have to learn his strengths and choose what route and approach works for him best.

interesting twist. is it only gonna be on the iphone and ipod touch, or are you looking at more platforms, cuz i really would love to play it, but no game is worth buying a $300 ipod for. or at least no game i can imagine.

well, like I said: I've only been hired to develop something for a pre-existing game engine- and that game engine was coded for the ipod touch and iphone, so my hands are tied. It's an augmented reality shooter that makes use of the iphone's internal compass and motion detection programming for the action- so if I was ported to be a flash game, it would be a bit crippled.

If it goes well, I'm hoping to re-develop it for a really robust FPS game engine for the Wii or Xbox 360. But for now, I have to do the job I was hired to do, and just develop it for the iphone/ipod engine.

The game will sell in the itunes store for like 2-3 bucks or something- a pretty good deal, actually.

I feel you though, man. I dont have an ipod either. The producer is buying me one though, sine I'n developing a game for it- ha ha.

if it's only two or three bucks, i might buy it anyway, just incase i ever get one. and the augmented reality would work on the dsi, but not the compass component. i'll forsure make my friends get it and play it on their ipods. man, it's gonna be sweet.

Yeah, I want to port it to the dsi like crazy. The compass is actually way more important than the camera component, but even with that disabled, the action still works pretty good. But If we port it to the dsi, i want to do it as a polygon-based proper 3D game, NOT a sprite based FPS which is what it is now. I want to do it on a whole new engine basically for the dsi. If it sells well on iphone and ipod touch, then it's possible. I want to port it to the dsi and the Wii, actually.

I don't have an iPhone/iPod Touch either, but I do have a DSi.

Hey man. I'm still waiting for mine. Hopefully by next week.

I'm pretty happy with the game so far. I mean, it's really hard trying to make a fun game around a really simple sprite based, FPS engine, but I think I'm doing ok so far. Wish I could tell you more about it, but I don't think I'm allowed to.

i don't have a name yet. I always hate that part.

I forget the company's name, but this is only their 2nd game.
